General Practitioners
General Practitioners will be responsible to provide their patients with complete primary health care, placing special focus on prevention. They will also be the ones who will be tasked with helping patients navigate through the GHS.
Due to their specialty, General Practitioners will be handling various first-degree medical incidents to relieve other Specialist Doctors
Selecting your General Practitioner
Selecting the General Practitioner of your choice, will depend on which doctors choose to join the GHS. You will be able to select from the doctors that elect to provide their services under the GHS.
Visiting a Health Specialist
Should a General Practitioner refer a patient to a Specialist, patients will have the choice to visit any Specialist who has joined the GHS. In such a case the patient will have to make a co-payment of €6 per visit.
In case the patient decides to visit a Specialist directly without a referral by his General Practitioner, there will be a charge of €25 (not considered as a co-payment).
Pharmaceutical products
Beneficiaries will be entitled to the pharmaceutical products from a specific list approved by the Health Insurance Organization (HIO) with a co-payment of €1 per product. Should beneficiaries opt for other types of more expensive pharmaceutical products which are not included in the list, they will have to pay the price difference.
Treatment Abroad
Treatment in hospitals outside Cyprus does not fall within the scope of the GHS, unless such treatment cannot be provided in Cyprus. The decision of whether there is such a need will be taken by an HIO-assigned medical council that will also decide on the hospital that the patient will be referred to.

Modifying your Health Plan
We recommend that you don’t modify your Health Plan in any way. You should wait until GHS services are fully applied, so that you can be able to judge if you are satisfied with the quality of medical care provided. In case there is any special reason or financial constraint, please contact your insurance agent who will inform you of your alternative options.
Alternative Health Plan options
Universal Life, in cooperation with Axa Global Health Care, has developed some alternative options under the MultiCare Health Products which can help you combine your private health insurance with the medical services provided under the GHS.
Cancelling/ Reinstating your Health insurance
In case you decide to cancel your Health Insurance, you can reinstate any time you want. However, you should keep in mind that in this case you will be subject to a new underwriting evaluation process. This means that any incurred health conditions which were previously covered, could be considered as pre-existing and might no longer be covered.
Annual Excess Amount
An excess is the amount the patient pays towards eligible treatment under his/her plan, which is then deducted from the amount payable. Any annual excess is applied each policy year for each member, even if treatment is continuous from one year to the next. Therefore the patient pays a significantly lower premium and can still access quality medical care that the rest of the MultiCare International Health Plan options.
